Out of the box, every processor in your entire life has been tuned from the factory for a balance of performance, power consumption, and reliability. But here's the thing. When your goal is to sell millions of chips that run as cool as possible with as few defects as possible, you end up leaving a little bit of performance on the table. Well, that's where overclocking comes in. By turning up the frequency or the clock, we can get extra performance, though not without limits. See, pushing the frequency too high is going to cause instability, which we can overcome by turning up the voltage, but that is in turn going to increase power consumption and heat and also eventually too much voltage is going to simply fry our chip. So, it's all a fine balancing act and cooling is of paramount importance, which is of course where this guy comes in. On the table in front of me is a customuilt threephase CPU cooling system that was designed to bring even modern power- hungry chips down to minus 100° C. It takes a lot of power. It makes a fair bit of noise and it wasn't cheap. But when it comes to keeping a chip at a consistent, very cold temperature, which is ideal for overclocking, this thing is pretty much the goat. But using it comes with some minor inconveniences. Chief among them being condensation. As you probably know, water and electronics, they don't mix too good. So, one of the things that we need to do is thoroughly insulate all of the cold parts of our cooling system from our motherboard itself. &gt;&gt; The PCB is entirely coated with liquid electrical tape. &gt;&gt; Cool. &gt;&gt; Or plastid dip if you're if you're able to get that. And then we have a heater in the back. It's It's freaking hot. Like, how many watts is this thing? &gt;&gt; I think it's like 300 watts. &gt;&gt; Wow. Okay. And that's from Elmore Labs, right? &gt;&gt; Elmore Labs. &gt;&gt; And that's just to make sure that if our CPU is atus 100°, we're not getting frost and liquid buildup on the back of the socket. So, you can see, we actually shot the video out of order. We've already used it today. That's why it's covered in um frost. that you can really see this way where water might drip down right around the CPU and into the socket which would be bad. &gt;&gt; Thank you. So, you'd kind of like turn it down a little bit and be like kind of playing with the knobs and dials as you go. So, I guess that's still a thing then. &gt;&gt; 100%. &gt;&gt; So, realistically, you're giving it 750 W right now. So, even though it looks like you've turned it down, it's actually turned way up over stock, which would be 600. &gt;&gt; Turned it last up. &gt;&gt; Now, I noticed that you don't have any dedicated cooling or dedicated monitors for your 12vt 2x6. So whether we're adding more power limit or whether we're adding more frequency or in the case of the way that Nvidia pretty much has a black box that manages all of that stuff for you, it is possible that whatever we were doing before was pushing us beyond some threshold to the point where it was actually harming performance. It's something that I feel like you only notice once you get exposed to like the next highest thing. Like I remember uh having a high refresh rate monitor and then my roommates in college having like a 60 Hz monitor and then trying to go like trying to even just watch him play Overwatch in his room, I like couldn't tell what was going on &gt;&gt; Right. I got so used to like having that information that even now 240 Hz while still a great gameplay experience. &gt;&gt; It just doesn't feel the same. It &gt;&gt; doesn't feel like an extension of your body like a 1000 Hz does. Like I know Blurbusters has been on this thousand herz holy grail for years at this point wanting to push everyone from display makers to game developers to like pursue a 1000 hertz. Consider me converted. And this is even without instantaneous pixel response times like we would get from something like a like an OLED, &gt;&gt; right? Like this is LCD 1000 Hz. And comparing to the OLED that we were running the benchmark on, it's uh I would say it's pretty tough to tell whether the added frame rate is making any impact compared to the, you know, clarity and pixel response times of an OLED. &gt;&gt; Yeah. So, too many FPS's just breaks this game. Apparently, &gt;&gt; we did find that some games if they have a VSYNC setting when you turn VSYNC on, it'll just go, \"Oh, your refresh rate is a 1,000. I guess I have to render a,000.\" So, that might be a solution here. Dude, I don't think there's a game that I could not enjoy more at a 1000 hertz than I would at less than a 1000 Hz. Not because you need it to perform your best. I don't think realistically I actually performed any better in Counter Strike for having a 1000Hz monitor, but just because it's just it's so smooth. It's just so smooth. Also, we were running all of this stuff at 6.2 GHz all core 1.4 volts. That tells me that in terms of the gaming machine that you're going to need to power these kinds of frame rates, &gt;&gt; we're a long ways off. &gt;&gt; We really are quite &gt;&gt; not that far in like Counter-Strike and esports games.
